NOTE: This thread is for commentary on the
process
of the UFOs. No criticism of individual stories, please.
So, the first-round winners for 2006 have been announced. Let's have some feedback on the awards so far. What do you like and dislike about the process? Any suggestions or ideas for improvement?
As for me, now that I've seen the results I'm wondering about the Members' Choice award. As you've probably seen, half of them went to the First Place winners anyway, and I'm uncertain on whether or not to call the Members' Choice idea a success. What do you guys think? Do the Members' Choice awards really mean anything? Should we keep them for next year or ditch them?

Sorry it's taken me a while to reply. It has been rather busy in my world lately,
Anyway, a couple of things:
- The badges you made were amazingly impressive (and clearly a lot of work!). If they are going to be that much work every year, you might want to start stockpiling images now.
- Keep the member's choice award. First, I do think it is an important honor that is different from first place. Given that we are active (we hope) members of a multifandom community, we should have (in theory) a wider range of reading and a greater appreciation of talent. And, we probably aren't voting for the big guy/girl in the fandom just because they are the big guy/girl. (In a few cases, we might not even know who the huge people are in a fandom.) Second, when there is a clear difference, I think it is important for that fourth author to get the recognition.
I might have some more things, but I'll have to think about it some more.

Damnit, I wrote this long reply and IE7 ate it. I don't want to write it again, for I am unwell, so I'll sum up.
I also think we should keep the member's choice award, for the same reason as December. In the case of one of my favorite fandoms, I didn't vote for any of the fics that actually won except for the member's choice. -.-;; Since a case like this will likely occur again, it's a cool thing to have, and probably important in a way.
Also, the badges are spectacular. You're really amazing, D-chan.

Thanks for the kudos, folks
We'll keep the Members' Choice award for the forseeable future, then.

Question: The links on the overall voting page... They are supposed to go to the actual stories right? Because I know at least "Burning Time" took me back to the UFO awards main page. It took me a long to actually find a viable link for the story, which was a bit of a problem.

Ack, you're right. Fixed.
Although, you really shouldn't have been going to the ballot if you hadn't read all the eligible stories yet... ^^;;

I had read them, but I skimmed them through again while I was at the ballot to get a better idea of how I wanted to vote.
Also, it just occurred to me that this probably wasn't supposed to happen - I got the second question wrong intially, but when I went back and changed my answer (presumably to the correct one), it took me straight to voting. There was supposed to questions on every story, wasn't there?

Nope. There is a question for every story, but you only have to answer two randomly-chosen ones.

I've got a question concerning the UFO Awards 2007 - I've nominated a few fics on Kim Possible, Full Metal Panic and Robotech - most of them are seconded as well. Now I'm in contact with the authors and told them that they need to give their permission to enter the contest. Well, at least two of the authors told me they had contacted the administrator giving permission, but none of the fics is signed "Author accepted" so far ... where lies our error?

Dejana probably just hasn't had time to update it yet. She likes to do a million things.

Hello!
I was wondering if there is going to be an update soon in the nomination page with the authors who accept the nomination recently? THANK YOU!

Yup
I was at a con over the weekend, so I fell a bit behind, but I'll get back on top of everything tomorrow.

An update, FYI:
Tonight I updated and responded to almost all the messages I had in the admin email inbox and my .moon PM inbox. That leaves the Fanfiction.net PMs and the LiveJournal PMs, which I will take care of tonight, in addition to the half-dozen or so emails and .moon PMs I still need to respond to.
I should be all caught up on the received responses by tomorrow.

I still have to send my responses to the FF.net PMs, but all the author-accepted nominations are now marked Accepted. I have some final notices and reminder messages to send as well, to hopefully get some more thumbs-ups on there.

I've proposed several fics for nomination - could any admin update the new nominations in the current UFO process?
Thanks in advance ...

Sorry about the delay. Approving nominations tends to be a low-priority task for me, especially this early in the year, since there's plenty of time for stories to be seconded etc. I'll get to them soon.

All caught up now, aside from a handful of things I need to investigate.
