Chapter 4
Sakuya…why? Do
you not know what I’ve given up for you?
Do you not understand how deep my love is? She fell to her knees, staring out at the sky blindly. The only way I can let you live your life
is to know that you’re near me. I know
I can’t see you, but…I need to know that you’re close. “Oh God!
I’m losing him twice!” Hurting
too bad to cry, she lay on the floor until the sun had set and the warmth left
the room. Standing, she turned and saw
the shattered cup. It looked like her
heart felt, and that was what finally broke her. Crying bitterly, she picked up the pieces and cleaned up the
mess; realizing that the only path forward was to throw away the broken shards
and start at rebuilding her soul without that dangerous organ.
That night, sleep came easily. She never saw Ralph open the door to her bedroom and walk over to
the bed, looking down at the woman sleeping before bending to the light and
snapping it off and leaving again. She
also never saw him writing down plans to finish crushing Sakuya by making her
fall in love with him.
Two days passed before she felt like she could face the
world. Since it was Sunday, she decided
to spend the day out in the sun. Her
chest held no warmth where here heart used to reside, and she desperately
needed it. Telling the guard to call
Ralph, she gently asked him if she could leave for the day. Since his dreams were all coming true, he
readily agreed and told the guard there was no need to follow his helpless
ward.
Aine walked aimlessly, listening to girls mourn the death of
Lucifer; and avoiding running into anyone she knew. Just as she was passing a record store, Cruel Jones came on the
screen and she had to turn away.
Walking quickly away from Shibuyu, she was startled when a car honked and
pulled up beside her. When a tall man
with black hair quickly jumped out of the car, Aine’s non-existant heart
skipped a beat before she realized it was only Yuki.
“Aine!! You’re not easy to find, girl!” He approached her like one approaching a
scared kitten. He knew he had enough
speed to catch her if she fled, but he wanted her to trust him. “Sakuya’s leaving for America today. If we hurry, you can see him before he
goes.”
He watched her wrestle with indecision before finally
looking up at him, the hint of fire again in her eyes. “Let’s go.”
Not sure exactly what made her change her mind, he pulled her over to
the car and they were on the road before she had a chance to change it
back. As he sped down the road towards
Narita, he smiled to himself. Hopefully
she’d be able to bring him back. If not
today, than soon. Pulling up to the
main terminal, he turned to her. “Tell
him to come back soon.” She was gone
almost immediately, setting off at a dead run.
He chuckled as he waited for her to come back out, thanking Kami that he
was already married and all of this angst was behind him.
Aine skidded to a stop as she saw the wall of reporters in
front of her. In the middle was a
leaner looking Sakuya. Is he
starving himself to death? She was
assailed by doubts as numerous as the questions being thrown at Sakuya by the
press. Frozen by her fear, she failed
to see that he’d suddenly abandoned the press clamoring around him. Aine looked back up just after he
disappeared. Where did he go?
A tourist late for a plane knocked her down. As she sat there gathering the spilled
contents of her purse, the thoughts rolled through her head. Couldn’t talk to him…and that may be the
last time I ever see him in person.” Suddenly a hand snatched her and pulled
her to her feet. Cutting off her
cry, the person whipped her around and she was suddenly looking straight into
Sakuya’s face.
There were no words needed between them. Reacting to the pain and anger she saw in
his eyes, she gently placed her hand on his cheek. He closed his eyes to savor the pleasure of her touch, which made
her reciprocate. When he opened his
back up, he realized she had to be hurting much more than himself. He’d had years to harden himself, but she
was as gentle as a butterfly, and about as naïve. Taking her hand and kissing it, he watched as her eyes opened and
then reached out to touch her face.
When she pulled him down for a kiss, he gave as good as he
got. He would have held her forever if
the pesky reporters hadn’t shouted out.
Realizing she would suffer if the reporters caught them together, he
turned to go. Her cry “Don’t go” slowed
him down; but her “Please don’t go!!” Stopped his flight altogether.
Turning to her, he could only say the first thing that came
to his mind. Aine…wait for me. Don’t let him touch you. I’ll be back for you…I promise.” He leaned forward to whisper in her
ear. “We belong to each other.” With that, he was gone.
Aine could only stare in the direction he’d fled. Finally realizing he was gone, she walked
back out of the terminal and headed towards the sleek sports car parked at the
far end of the loading area. Getting
in, she looked straight ahead, not even acknowledging the man sitting beside
her.
“Went that well huh?” Yuki started the car and pulled
smoothly out into traffic. “If you want
to talk…” As the tears started, he
pulled over. “Oh hell, come here.” He pulled her across the stick shift into
his lap and held her against his chest as she cried into the fabric clutched in
her hands. Why am I finding myself
in this predicament all the time now?
First Maria, who’s in the most emotional stage of her pregnancy, now
Aine. If I didn’t know better, I’d take
it personally.”
Finally she calmed down and realized where she was. Blushing furiously, she pushed away from him
and sat back on her side of the car.
“Gomen, Yuki.”
He chuckled. “That’s
okay, but I’m thinking about making you pay the cleaning bill. This is silk you know.” He pulled the damp shirt away from his chest
before turning and smiling at her.
“Better yet…instead of paying for my laundry, why don’t you tell me what
happened in there? I mean, his decision
affects all of us you know.”
“He told me to wait, he’d be back.” She looked at Yuki, tears starting again in
her eyes. “It’s my fault he’s leaving
for America. I don’t understand why,
but I know I’m to blame.”
“Alright, you’re to blame.
Now, get over it. All of us
decided to go solo, so none of us are going to suffer from it. In fact…” he shifted down to take a sharp
corner, “my solo album comes out in two weeks.”
“Are you leaving him too?”
Her eyes widened in surprise.
“We can’t live as if he’ll be back tomorrow. It was a decision we all made
together.” He chucked her chin. “Tell you what, keep in touch with us and
let us know if you hear anything. We’ll
do the same. Okay?”
“Okay.” She smiled
brightly, if falsely.
“Alright, I believe this is where I found you. Better get going before we start a new
rumor.” He pulled over in front of the
same record store and she got out. He
was gone before she could gather her wits.
Deciding that the best course of action for herself would be to keep
Ralph happy and out of her bed, she headed back to his apartment to do what he
wanted…write sexy lyrics for his bands.
