Unspoken Oblivion by Jaded Catalyst

previous  Chapter 16: Sweet Catastrophe  next

“I’ll be a bit late, but I’ll definitely be there. Don’t worry about it, Roz.”

“Alright. I’ll see you at the park.”

“Bye.” Jay shut her phone and leaned back on her car seat. She had watched the sunrise from her car with the roof folded back so that she could feel the crisp morning air on her skin. Never before had she felt more alive. Having gotten no sleep last night, Jay was also blessed with the absence of her usual nightmares. No more screams. No more nightmares.

Not today, never again.

After taking a long drive and making her deliveries, she was starting to feel better than the night before. However, the warrior had awakened and Jay was likely to succumb to its dominance sooner or later.

But not today.

/It is the final day./

“I have heard that fall of a world is the most beautiful sight of all.”

/And the most catastrophic./

“Catastrophe is nothing more than a most bittersweet goodbye.”

/We face it today./

She shook her head. “No. We face it every day, but it is today is the day we acknowledge it. Humanity is a most fragile thing – so easily defeated, so easily lost. Yet, its value is unmatched. Today is the last day we embrace our humanity before falling victim to our inner demons. A sunrise to start the final day, a sunset to end it all.”

/Tomorrow is still a new day./

“One that we have no choice but to face. The sunset comes at dawn, and in the midst of the twilight, we will find ourselves between worlds. Tomorrow, the legend begins anew. Have you spoken to him yet?”

/Yes. It wasn’t until this morning that I was able to communicate with him./

“Where is he?”

/He’s with the girls. They are waiting for you./

Jay was hardly surprised that Broderick was with the girls. It was the final day for this world, and Jay wanted everyone to spend it together. “Can’t keep them waiting, can I?” She revved her engine and took to the road. Her emotions, fears, and regrets were all things of the past. Nothing was going to hold her back anymore.

Not today, never again.
