I always wondered if in their subconscious they felt something as each one picked off of the list. I mean, I knew that the queen and Matallia (sp) couldn't completely eradicate any feeling and memory that they had, even if they were only indicernable shadows, they were still there, waiting to be uncovered and allowed in the light again.
I like how you don't use names, they are all feeling the same thing for their missing king. Even though, as I read, I could almost see it being Nephrite that was speaking for them all, he always seemed the most compassionate and prone to remembering than the rest.
