Reviews on Crossroads by Dejana Talis

This is a simple but interesting story. It's nice to see the author branching out into AU, using her considerable talent to make the characters recognisable, even if the setting and the situation are not.

As usual, Dejana adds layer upon layer of detail to bring the characters and their world to life. Darien's untidy apartment, his GTHOOH fund (read the story for the definition), his pick up truck, it all adds up to paint a picture of a bored and frustrated man who has nevertheless become deadened to the hopelessness of his surroundings.

Serena is not given as much time as Darien, for structural reasons, but she's certainly recognisable, and her hope and determination are a nice and necessary contrast against the accepting attitude of Sunset. Her physical description incorporates many images of light and colour, providing another attractive contrast. The attraction between the two characters is understated but certainly there in the little things they say and do.

Dejana's style is a little bit more relaxed in this story, perhaps because she doesn't have to make it fit into canon, so she sometimes strays from the storyline and adds on little amusing observations. They add a welcome new flavour to the story; this one is probably my favourite:

"Chad's seemingly unconscious habit was a subject of great mystery in Sunset. Was it always the same glass? Did he ever have to buy a new cloth? Why wasn't the glass worn away to nothing by now? Was it ever really clean?"

I'd like to see another AU from you if you ever get the urge to write another one.

As someone who has lived in a small, isolated town I can really understand where Darien is coming from. He feels trapped. He is ready to leave but needs an extra nudge to get him going.

The imagery in this story is great. The town is dusty and decayed just like the hopes of its inhabitants. Nice job.
