In Common

"You know, we do have a lot in common."

He'd told her that once when they were younger, when James and Lily had just become James and Lily and she was still trying to understand everything about Sirius Black and Sirius Black was still trying to understand why he understood Lily Evans. They were standing on the balcony, magic snow behind them and real life snow in front of them. He was in black and scarlet, she in scarlet and black.

James, of course, was wearing orange.

Lily looked over at this dark boy with hair hanging in front his face. His arms were crossed and his back carried the weight of his name, his heritage, even though he had long since thrown it away. He had turned his back on the world he was supposed to belong to with strength, resolute against the masses who shunned him. Their whips stung his back and he took it, unflinching. Words and hexes touched him, but he showed no pain.

She reached forward, warm from the drink and cold from the night, and pushed his too long hair aside. Eyes darker than coal, crackling with heat. He was alive in every manner of his aspect. Every silk strand and every curve of musculature. Everything moved and shifted and changed and vanished and was reborn. He was fire, living and breathing as she did. Full of life and energy and determination to show them all, to prove them wrong. He would forever stand tall, giving his world a blanket “fuck you” and make himself better than all of them put together.

She pulled her hand away, and flinched with heat quickly absorbing the chill. “No, Sirius. We don’t have anything in common.”
