Summary:Minako asks Yaten a question she already knows the answer to.
Have You Ever

"Have you ever felt useless?" Minako asked him with her legs swung over his lap. His fingers were entwined with her own, their arms stretched out to their full length as she studied them, playing with them.

"You act like you've never seen a good manicure before," Yaten joked. "And no. I can't say that I have."

Minako smiled wryly, stopping her movement and just holding his hand for a moment. "No. Of course you haven't."

Yaten raised an eyebrow. "Should I have?"

She shook her head. "It isn't in your nature."

Yaten's arm was beginning to hurt, but he found her fascination amusing. "Have you ever?"

"You need to be more specific before I'll take a shot," she teased, grinning as he swatted at her knee.

"Felt useless," he concluded to avoid her joking.

Her eyes grew distant, no longer focusing on his hands. "Sometimes," she admitted.

He furrowed his brow, looking down at her. He found her expression worrying. She looked pensive, contemplative... even melancholy. "Don't frown. You'll get lines."

She smiled sadly, appeasing him only because she could sense his concern hidden by his vanity. "I'll get Botox."

"Oh, yes. That's healthy," Yaten drawled. "And what is this nonsense about being useless?"

Her smile faded and he wished he hadn't asked for clarification. "I know, it's silly... But I sometimes feel as though I don't make a difference. Like they could all go on without me."

If he had been the sort of person who gave hugs, he probably would have hugged her. "That's bullshit."

She nodded in agreement. "I know."

He studied her for a moment before bending his elbow, drawing their hands back. He held it to his chest, resting his lips on her knuckles but not kissing them. They brushed lightly against the skin as he spoke. "But you still think it?"

"All the time," she admitted quietly.

He could think of nothing to say to that, so he merely sat with her as she sorted all of this out in her head. She would occasionally glance back at him, but mostly she looked forward. Or thought back. He couldn’t be sure. Either way, he continued to hold her hand in his even after it had fallen asleep.
